Traffic Signal Operations & Coordination Timing Plans
Our founding principals have extensive knowledge and hands-on project experience in traffic signal operations, signal timing design, coordination timing plans, Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS) and operations. Coupled with our firm’s capabilities in signal design and traffic modeling, we also provide traffic signal operation evaluations and timing design services, including designing timing plans for new signalization projects, retiming existing traffic signals, developing optimized timing plans, and preparing coordination timing plans for signalized corridors.
Our engineers utilize the start-of-the-art software programs to evaluate, simulate, optimize, coordinate and synchronize traffic signal systems. The software programs allow us to create timing model based on existing traffic volumes, roadway and intersection geometrics, intersection spacings, and traffic characteristics of link speeds, travel times, and start-up lost times at signalized intersections. After the model calibration, optimized or coordinated timing plans are consequently developed, consisting of important timing parameters of offsets, force-offs, phase splits, phase sequence, left-turn phase treatments such as protected vs. permissive, and pedestrian timings. The timing plans are eventually implemented into the signal control systems with either 170/170E/2070 or NEMA controller units.
Our team’s previous project experience included signal timing work for various jurisdictions outside Alberta including the City of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan where one of our founding principals recently had successfully completed a timing coordination project involving retiming over thirty-seven (37) signalized intersections along three major arterial corridors in the city. Both of our founding principals had also completed various timing coordination projects in the US States of California and Michigan where they led the signal timing optimization and coordination project efforts involving over hundreds of signalized intersections.
